Montagu Cellar, Company

Montagu Coöperative Wineceller Limited is situated at the beginning of the Little Karoo about 200km from Cape Town on Route 62. Montagu Muskadelboere Koöperasie (name changed in 1992 to present name) was founded on 17 March 1941 under the leadership of Mr DJ Burger Sr – chairman of 15 members. It was decided to use the established business premises and cellar facilities of PJ Joubert in Bath street (next to the present VIC Hotel). For a view years, from 1942 wine was produced here with the help of Mr Joubert’s staff. The Coöperative grew very quickly and under the chairmanship of Mr KW du Toit it was decided to buy the present premises in 1948. The cellar was build and wine was produced under the watchful eyes of Dr Costa and Mr Moni. The Monis Marsala and Moscato had its origin in this very same cellar that is still used for our own products and so the tradition is kept alive. From 800t grapes and 15 members in 1942 the cellar grew to 13 000t grapes and 61 members in 2011. These days muscadel are only 400t of the total production and only an exclusive amount are produced for the public on the traditional method. At the moment the cellar produces white and red muscadel. From the beginning of the cellar there has only been 3 recognised winemakers: Tom Visser in 1965, Sonny Malan in 1972 (34 years and still assisting) and now Eben Rademeyer since 2007 with the help of his reliable cellar – technician Collin Wright, that has been with the cellar since 1990. The cellar produces various cultivar red and white wines for the market; obviously including our well known muscadel. At the moment our bottle range consist of 3 white wines, 2 red wines, 2 sweet wines (red and white muscadel) and white grape juice. Wines are marketed locally, but we also use a delivery service to delivery our wines country wide to our clients doorstep.
